OCNLR LEVEL 3 AWARD IN AWARENESS OF DEMENTIA

The Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia has been developed in partnership with Skills

for Care and Development.

The qualification forms part of a suite of qualifications in dementia care that have been

developed to support government strategies to increase knowledge, understanding and

skills of caring for people living with dementia.

The qualifications support the changing needs within the sector and are part of the Workforce Development Plan established through the National Dementia Strategy Project (England) 2009. Development of dementia awareness and understanding will enhance the level of care provided to people living with dementia.

The programme is suitable for all those who are working with people living with dementia, for example as a dementia carer, care worker, healthcare assistant, support/key worker and many other roles. To complete this training, you must be currently supporting a person living with dementia.

The course comprises the following 4 modules:

"Understanding the process and experience of dementia"
"Understanding the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion"
"Understanding the role of communication and interactions with individuals who have dementia"
"Understanding the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person-centred approach"

What do I have to do?

The programme is made up of a combination of training sessions and assessment sessions. After each training session you will be given self-directed learning tasks (homework) to complete. During training and assessment sessions you will be asked to take part in discussions and activities. You must attend all sessions and complete all assessment tasks to be able to complete the course. Learners will also be expected to access support from tutors and support staff via the telephone and an e-forum.

Will I get a qualification?

On successful completion of this course you will have achieved the nationally recognised qualification, Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia. All programmes are accredited by OCN London.

Further Information

The Awards at Level 2 and 3, can be commissioned by an organisation for delivery in-house to all staff working with people living with dementia.
